The Great Years

Sir Matt was determined for United to fair much better in the league than they had the previous year. United had a fine season, they finished runners up to Liverpool in the league and reached the FA Cup semi-finals. Denis Law was Uniteds hero, 30 goals in 30 appearances. Bobby Charlton played in all but two games and also having a good season were youngsters George Best and Nobby Stiles.

The only new addition to Uniteds team for the 1964-1965 season was 60,000 signing John Connelly from Burnley. United were the best team in the league and won their sixth championship on goal average from Leeds United (ha ha ha).

The following season United had a chance of winning the European Cup. United reached the quarter finals after aggregate victories over HJK Helsinki and ASK Vorwaerts. In the quarter finals United were to play the mighty Benfica. United won the home leg 3-2. The return leg was in Lisbon and United were not expected to progress with such a slender lead. George Best scored the first two goals and set up the third for John Connelly. Shay Brennan scored an own goal, but goals from Crerand and Charlton ensured a 5-1 on the night and a 8-3 victory overall. Although a great result the euphoria was soon lost as United went out in the Semi Finals to Partizan Belgrade 2-1 on aggregate.

The following season United had two new faces in the line up. Johnny Aston on the left wing had graduated from the youth team to the first team along with Bobby Noble at left back. David Sadler also masde a name for himself in the centre of midfield. Also new in the side was Alex Stepney bought from Chelsea for 55,000. United played some marvellous football and won the league with a four point gap from runners up Nottingham Forest.

Winning the league gave Sir Matt and United another chance at the European Cup. United first played Hibernian of Malta, they went through 4-0 on aggregate. In the second round they played Fc Saajevo, in the away leg United got a 0-0 draw. At home United won 2-1 with goals from Aston and Best. Gornik Zabrze of Poland were Uniteds quarter final oppenents, United won the home leg 2-0 and lost the away leg 1-0 but still went through on aggregate. United reached the semi finals for the second time in two years, this time there oppenents were the great Real Madrid. The home leg was won 1-0 by United. It was a tight game and a goal from George Best gave them the one goal advantage. It was generally feared that the 1 goal advantage would not be enough to get them through. 120,000 fans packed into the Bernabeu stadium to watch the return leg. United were without Denis Law, so the team included veteran full back Bill Foulkes. At half-time United were losing 3-1 and it looked as if United were going out. At half time Sir Matt simply said "Go out there and enjoy yourselves...go out and attack". This obviously worked, 15 minutes from time David Saddler scored to put the aggregate score level. In the last few minutes Best setup Bill Foulkes, who calmly side stepped the ball into the net to become the hero of the game.

The 29th May 1968 United were at Wembley to play Benfica in the European Cup Final.100,000 fans attended the game to watch United to see if they could be the first English club to lift the European Cup. United's was as followed:

  1. Stepney
  2. Brennan
  3. Dunne
  4. Crerand
  5. Foulkes
  6. Stiles
  7. Best
  8. Kidd
  9. Charlton(capt)
  10. Sadler
  11. Aston
The first half was a quiet affair and ended goal less. In the second half, Bobby Charlton opened the scoring with a header from a Tony Dunne cross. Ten minutes from time Graca got an equilise for Benfica. In the final minute Eusebio almost scored a winner, but was denied by Alex Stepney. The scores were 1-1 at full time, so extra time followed.

Only two minutes into the first half of extra time George Best scored after being one on one with the keeper. One minute later Brian Kidd headed United's third goal. Bobby Charlton then added a fourth. Unieted had finally done it. One month later Matt Busby was awarded a knighthood to add to his CBE which he was awarded in 1958.
